"Christine, I love you." The phantom's voice played a sweet tune in my mind. It was the first time he had confessed his love, but sadly, I couldn't return the favor. He had given me everything, fame, fortune, and a life of excitement and curiosity. Still, he had threatened to hang my beloved Raoul and sentence me to an eternity locked away from the world. My clammy hands shook with emotion as I slid the beautiful, diamond ring off my finger. The disfigured man helplessly gazed into my eyes, transforming my soul. I was the only one to look past his hideous physical appearance, to know how to comfort a creature of darkness; I couldn't bare holding in my emotions any longer. Tears plunged down my pale cheeks and I looked down to take his hand. Making sure not to drop the small item, I closed his rough fingers around the ring.
