Pepper is a black feline (perhaps a Serval Cat?). Ray is a brown canine (perhaps an African Wild Dog?). 
The two unlikely friends live in a forest. They lived ordinary lives, hunted for food, and slept in trees or caves.
When they meet a hummingbird, they certainly did not expect a lifechanging event.
