After the brutal death of their mother in battle (in book 1) their father, Captain Levi Ackerman, took a brief retirement to raise his motherless children. He trains them, and they grow up to be strong warriors.
As Levi's health deteriorates he stays permanently retired. Kuchel and Hajime live the rest of their lives in an era of newfound world peace, but struggle to pick of the pieces of what remains.
