In Crystal's society, the "mentally disabled" were ordered to be effaced. Effacing is a process in which one's brain is partially removed, the part where the disabilities are. However, this part of the brain also holds your memories. Everyone who goes through Effacing will suffer the unknowingness of their former life. When Crystal wakes up in a hospital unaware of who anyone is, the life ahead of her is going to be very different than how it was before.
