The human mind is a complex thing, similarities actually less common than differences in an average case. Due to this, half of the time people can't (or more plainly, don't) understand the other and this may cause confusion, a possible outbreak of misplaced anger or sadness. Doubts planted on someone, when they shouldn't be. Lance, a human being himself, often felt guilty thinking these thoughts when he himself had a brain that worked up different points and opinions.
Not that it would ever stop him from second guessing one person in particular. Himself.
(Also known as small snippets of depressing scenarios I've put my baby in).

This is a book about feeling isolated. Isolated from your family because they don't trust a single word that comes out of your mouth. Isolated from your friends because they're all stuck in space and you have no means of contacting them. Occasionally they show up in your dreams but that's entirely out of your control. Isolated from the world because you've been assigned the title of yet another headcase; a victim of trauma so terrifying that you can no longer tell fantasy from reality.
