Casey is a teenage Californian loner girl. Forced into isolation in the Sierra mountains, she never expects in this present day and age, a wild man and a small double-winged dragon named Spike to appear and take her away. Anywhere is better than the dump of a cabin in the middle of snow country. In haste, Casey hits the road to experience reality as she once knew it, suddenly imbued with an invisible and volatile fabric of magic.
Supported by an unlikely witch, and a narcoleptic necromancer, Casey searches for her place in an uncanny society of what she considers misfits. Spike becomes the ultimate companion as she uncovers an unscrupulous underground world of threatened Shape-shifters, an incredible ecosystem of creatures once deemed myth, and winds her way through intricate layers of the corrupted Magical Fold. The more she learns, the closer she comes to a murderous warlock who is quietly calculating her every move.
