Damon Nielson is just like any other high school student. He keeps his nose clean, and tries not to get involved with anything that would cause him more strain. Having being bullied at school, losing his mother, and living with a father who doesn't seem to want him around, Damon begins to really see just how much his own life is worth especially with his senior year slowly coming to an end, and he begins to plan a way of escape.
During this time however, a new student has come to Damon's school, the pretty but shy Lucy Shelby, who has some struggles of her own; one of the most obvious being that she is mute and is unable to speak with anyone else. Under strange circumstances, the two become friends and Damon agrees to help Lucy get a date with one of his 'friends' who may or may not like her as well.
What results is a friendship unlike anything Damon has ever experienced; one that could very well change his life forever, if it turns out to be all true. Can Damon find true meaning in his life and find healing, or will he lose another friend in the end, like always?
