Leah lives in a futuristic world in which society is made up of one gender; female with no knowledge of the other. Each woman within the society is born and placed into The Institution, their City's school, where they are raised and taught, until they are old enough to graduate. When they graduate from The Institution, the City Leaders assign each of them with a career, which is understood as being their career for life. The City Leaders choose "Breeder" for Leah - a person who breeds the next generation for their City and The Institution. However, Leah's career leads her to the discovery that not every baby given birth to by the Breeders goes to the Institution and instead, is believed to go somewhere else.
