El capitán Achab tiene una obsesión que domina su vida: vencer a la enorme ballena blanca que le arrebató su pierna, cuya leyenda negra se forjó con la muerte de los balleneros que intentaron darle caza. Ismael, un joven maestro de escuela, se enrola junto con un arponero polinesio con el que traba amistad llamado Queequeg en el Pequod, un barco ballenero que parte de Massachussets, gobernado por Achab.

A bordo del Pequod, Ismael se encuentra con una extraña tripulación de razas y procedencias muy variadas, entre la que hay arponeros tan aguerridos como un caníbal, un piel roja o un africano salvaje. Bajo la dirección del capitán Achab, el Pequod y sus marineros ponen rumbo a alta mar, al encuentro de la gran ballena blanca.
