Georgianna, a mysterious, unchaperoned lady, must join a California bound wagon train with a Joseon card shark in order to escape her unfortunate past.
Georgianna, often called Miss Elliot, hasn't found a place to call home ever since her father's unexpected death. Driven from her New England home and forced to abandon her Uncle's plantation in the dead of night, she flees to the "Gateway to the West" where she hopes to join a wagon train headed to California - the only problem being, she doesn't know the first thing about traveling West.

Lee "Card" Young, sometimes referred to as a con artist, has never spent more than two weeks in any town since before the Mexican War broke out. He knows how to manipulate a deck of cards better than most Americans could cut a steak. The saloon gamblers don't like his slick fingering but can't figure out how he's cheating, so they drive him out of their town on claims that "Chin-eese" don't belong among them. To avoid being lynched, he keeps a small suitcase filled for a quick escape to the next town - which happens to be Independence, Missouri.

Will the Card Shark con Georgianna out of her money or will she con him out of his heart?

The Edge of Misery: The Mitchel Brothers Series Book Two by BritCYancey
22 parts Complete
** Picks up where The Edge of Hell (Mitchell Brothers Series Book One) left off** If there's one thing Declan Mitchell learned from watching his mama almost die from the heartbreak of losing his daddy to a war nineteen years ago, it was that a great and powerful love delivered an equally devastating heartbreak and suffering-the kind he had every intention of avoiding like the bubonic plague. And until traveling west to Idaho Territory and coming face to face with the mismatch-eyed, auburn-haired beauty, Wren McCrawdon, he believed he might succeed in carrying out his plans of never marrying. Molded by her traumatic journey west when she was twelve, twenty-four-year-old, accident-prone Wren McCrawdon's life on her family's ranch in Falcon Ridge, Idaho, is full of back-breaking work, beginning as dawn's first rays peek across the mountains and ending long after the sun sets when she can barely drag her weary bones up the stairs to her bedroom. But from the morning Declan Mitchell and his family arrive, her miserable existence becomes more bearable until tragedy strikes when all she sees are the harsh realities of loss and suffering. Concerned for Wren's safety and remembering how bitter the edge of misery was after his daddy died-Declan discovers he's willing to do anything he can to take it away from her... even if it means a marriage of convenience is the only suitable solution. There are only two problems: first, it's already apparent he's following in his mama's footsteps toward eventual heartbreak, and second he somehow has to convince Wren to agree.

Cricket Peterson was born and raised in Blanco, Texas and never desired leaving. It wasn't necessary. Not after her parents retired to Italy and she was left to tend for their lavender farm. She loves the lavender hills and spent most of her childhood in them with a local who quickly became her inseparable best friend. The only downside to their friendship is his sister. Despite her childhood antics, however, it turns out Lyle's sister may be at her wits end. After leaving university in NYC, she returns home at a cost. Her parents want her to be married, or at least dating. Through a series of odd events, Lyle asks Cricket to pretend to be in a relationship with his sister and in spite of her best efforts, she finds herself more drawn to the intrusive woman than ever before. Aster Johnson loves music. In fact, she went to university to get a degree in it. However, college wasn't the environment she wished, not with her creepy professor's hands on approach to teaching, and she just wants to go home, but her parents are quite controlling. They want her to marry so that she can focus on her studies with a security blanket of her own. In a heated argument with them, she confesses she's in a committed relationship and is focusing on writing her violin piece. As much as her parents approve of her musical endeavors, they want her to have someone besides them to rely on throughout life. She knows they have good intentions, but she doesn't want a relationship. Still, to save face her brother's best friend agrees to pretend to be her serious girlfriend. Problem is, they can't stand one another. After moving onto Cricket's property, Aster finds herself oddly curious about the woman. As it turns out, Cricket may feel the same, but can they put their differences aside, or will they forever be locked in a down spiral until Aster finally leaves? ⚠️Trigger Warning: This novel contains short, intense action, grief and stalking. ❤ Mature Content ⚢ Lesbian Romance/Lit 📚
