"A Doppelgänger is a person who is a supernatural double of a person that has lived before them. They are Nature's way of balancing itself out by repeatedly creating mortal counterparts of truly immortal beings. These mortal counterparts are made to live and eventually die in their place. They're supposed to be sworn enemies, and the Doppelganger before them wants to make their life a living hell."

Doppelgängers are replaced once the current is in need one, so 16 years after Elena became a vampire, a new Petrova Doppelgänger is born. Following the reign of dark brown hair and doe brown eyes, is Elanora Montgomery. She, unfortunately, gets mistaken for either the compassionate yet slightly annoying Elena Gilbert, or devious, compulsive, Katherine Pierce.

But what happens when Elena Gilbert returns to town and meets the new Doppelganger? Let's just say, the universe wasn't very kind.
