Doppelgängers are replaced once the current is in need one, so 16 years after Elena became a vampire, a new Petrova Doppelgänger is born. Following the reign of dark brown hair and doe brown eyes, is Elanora Montgomery. She, unfortunately, gets mistaken for either the compassionate yet slightly annoying Elena Gilbert, or devious, compulsive, Katherine Pierce.
But what happens when Elena Gilbert returns to town and meets the new Doppelganger? Let's just say, the universe wasn't very kind.
