When terrorists attack the USA, leaving thousands dead, Evangeline Abbot's father is among the rubble of the razed buildings.
Now orphaned, Evie and her sister Hannah are forced to leave behind sunny Southern California for the ever-gray Washington state to stay with their unpleasant Aunt Jeanine.
Haunted by PTSD hallucinations and psychotic breakdowns, Evie just wants to keep her head down and finish her sophomore year, but fate seems to have something else in store. Because on February 4, new information on the bombings are exposed-they contained a biological element that awakened powers in some people, Changing them.
Are Evie's hallucinations really visions? Is she among the Changed? She doesn't want to believe it, but something inside her knows it's true.
When the government orders testing in all places of work, schools included, they begin to cart off all those who test positive, sending them to camps in the mountains were no one knows what happens. Evie has a choice to make-allow herself to be taken to these mysterious camps, or disappear into the night, never looking back.
