"Professional Woman of Color" is a reflection written to describe the ambiguous and difficult roles we take on day in and day out as social workers- addressing social problems and difficulties in the very same communities we grew up in. Tied to the history of systemic oppression and racial distinctions of "other" the narrative describes the challenges faced by women of color as they rise in their professional journeys.

A Maya Angelou inspired piece that aims to validate intelligence and beauty in women of color. Fueling motivation, while encouraging individuals to go against the grain of cyclical oppression. The truth is never pleasant, especially when it entails matters of racial relationships and discrepancies. We need to have honest and in-depth dialogues regarding the external and internal wrongdoings within the social service system. Be encouraged to do the work, but join in the dialogue of change that will eventually manifest into bridging the gaps between what is learned in "diversity" training and what is practiced.
