A companion story to my novel Shadows May Fall.
*Folks who have been reading along - you may have noticed that some of the parts have been unpublished (the ones set in 1904 and 1908.) The reason for this is that while I really enjoyed delving into the past with these characters and fleshing out Daniel and Lillian, they weren't really adding anything and coming up with a third one to fill the gap was just that -- filling the gap. I'll post them over at my website once this story is complete.

Brave Enough To Love Again
I stood with my back to her, shielding her, and my murderous eyes stared down at the poor excuse of a man, promising unimaginable pain if he dared to move or even flinch. The enormity of control it took me to suppress the impulse to eradicate the piece of scum, who dared to even think about laying a hand on a woman, was inconceivable. My whole body was trembling with rage. The guy was intimidated by the fury in my eyes and stumbled back to his intoxicated friends who were too dazed to understand the situation. I was disappointed and relieved at the same time that the chaos didn't end in a fist fight. When I turned around to console her, she was gone. And as I looked around, I saw her back just leaving the bar through the entrance. I hurried out to follow her. She walked ahead of me aimlessly and disoriented like a wounded animal that had just escaped the claws of death. My heart ached for her. I found a kindred soul in her. She evidently had been wounded in the past. Just like me. Winter, 1917. BOOK 2 'We were both breathing heavily and there was silence throughout the crowd. No cheering, no booing - not even a whisper. Finally, when I felt Jenny's hand on my back, I had an overwhelming sense of fatigue. My vision was clouded in black spots, and I could tell Nova was struggling too, because she spread her paws, shaking her head and squeezing her eyes shut. Then, she stumbled to the ground, causing an abrupt roar of cheering on my side of the fans. "You have alot to learn, little one." I growled softly as I passed her, supported by Jenny and James. "That was wicked, Shadow. You should do that all the time, the way you.." James drones on about how awesome the battle was, though I stopped listening when he tried to act out the scene, and I just nodded as if I understood everything he was saying. "Where do you need to go? You're pretty cut up." Jenny murmured, stroking my fur as I padded slowly down to the Black Lake. "I need to hunt." Something to do with the infamous Sirius Black, who abandoned Shadow in an attic when she was only a kitten.
