Richie Tozier hasn't exactly had the classic teenage experience depicted in movies. He doesn't think many have defeated a demonic clown. Nor gaining large amounts of trauma from said experience. It didn't help his parents showed no care or interest in him, adding to that trauma. A tattoo of a number was also on his arm, which he didn't know the meaning of. He had no knowledge of where it was from, only vaguely remembering a doctor giving it to him when he was younger. It was only a few years ago that the abilities appeared, ones he didn't know how to control. The lack of understanding kept him in silence, refusing to admit he was a walking science experience. But, when he is suddenly forced to see his cousins in Hawkins, he finally has some understanding.
