What has become of our world?
Orphans, Sequoia and River, question the mundane nature of the lives around them. Struck with the tragic deaths of their parents, the children open their eyes to the reality surrounding them. Sequoia, the eldest, has her heart set on becoming a guardian; the only job allowing her to journey beyond the gates. She struggles between her life as a guard and her dream to see the outer world.
Within the walls of Adamas, the false peace surrounding the people blind them from the reality of the have outside. The old ways of life have faded with the passing of time as the bland routine of work and survival consumes every though. The art, religion and culture of civilizations been wiped clean to create a perceived unity. Cyborg-like people with barely any discernible personalities fill the hallways. A perfect world in the eyes of a lifeless visionary. However, death lingers every day just out of reach as a discreet war between them and the rebels causes the Residers to fear the forest beyond their gates. The animalistic perseverance of the rebels to enter and destroy Adamas gives little hope of survival in the long run. Unfortunately, people are not their only enemy. The mutated animals and the toxic storms of the apocalypse constantly beat down at the doors of their sanctuary.
Each day, she watches the world crash around her. The dreamless, rule-filled existence kills her slowly. All she can do is breathe and hope for the best...

It's only getting worse for some, as their cities that are supposed to be providing for them are failing to do so. Survivors Wesly and Valentine aren't content with this, however, especially since Val's mother desperately needs life-saving medicine that the city just won't send. With no other options, the two journey outside the wall to study the monsters beyond, selling the information they find to the city in exchange for their support. While dangerous, they manage the task fine until one journey out they stumble across a disturbing, gruesome revelation that reveals not only more about the city, but the end of the world as a whole.
