Jeder Mensch hat einen Schutzgeist in Form seines chinesischen Tierkreiszeichens, der im Ruhezustand als Tattoo auf dem Körper verweilt. Nur wenn Gefahr droht oder der Träger die Anwesenheit seines Schutzgeistes wünscht, erscheint er in seiner echten Form. 
Seit einigen Jahren jedoch ist nichts mehr, wie es einmal war: Die Schutzgeister spielen verrückt und die Handbücher, anhand derer die Träger lernen, mit ihren Schutzgeistern umzugehen, verlieren an Bedeutung. 
Illaria ist die erste und bisher einzige Person, auf deren Haut nach der Geburt kein Schutzgeist erschienen ist, und niemand weiß warum. An der Zwanzigjährigen verzweifeln die Gelehrten. Wird sie die rebellierenden Schutzgeister wieder in den Griff bekommen und so die Kontrolle der Gelehrten über den Staat wieder herstellen?

Inspiriert von einem Fantasy-Titel-Spiel von @Munderoon auf Twitter (https://twitter.com/watchedstuff/status/930133680756084736), bei dem dieser Titel für meine Angaben entstanden ist. Ich weiß noch nicht genau, was ich hieraus mache, doch zumindest die Idee wollte ich schon mal festhalten. :)
