2031 San Francisco.
Sixteen-year-old Piper Trueblood is the young apprentice of legendary Shadowhunter, Emma Carstairs. Her parabatai, - and best friend - Miguel King fight San Francisco’s demons by night and train in the art of violence by day. Locally, prime Shadowhunters are being slaughtered and slowly but surely they make their way towards Emma Carstairs - the biggest and baddest demon huntress. Piper knows little about Emma’s past and even littler about the Shadowhunter war with Clarissa Morgenstern at it’s centre. All documents of the Pandemonium Wars are either destroyed or hidden, kept far from the childish grasp of today’s Shadowhunters.

But to decipher these murder’s and to discover the culprits, Piper, Miguel, and new friend Archer, will have to dig up roots that may not want to come to light. Behind Emma’s back, she follows clue after clue, finding the history of her trainer and those before her.

In the name of the Clave, Consul, Covenant and Council and the Angel Raziel, we hereby rescind all knowledge of Shadowhunter past in the hopes that future generation’s do not repeat our most violent and grievous history. The Pandemonium Wars and the Mortal War before that will not be repeated or spoken of, nor will the events which followed Shadowhunter Emma Theresa Carstairs. For the continuation of our kind and the human race, ready to fulfil our holy mandate, we decree this law bound and tied with an oath which every adult Nephilim must swear.
