If you are suffering from sciatica or herniated disc, your doctor may suggest a procedure known as lumbar discectomy. This is mostly done as an outpatient procedure. The procedure is done to remove lumbar disc material, which might be pressing on a certain nerve root. The doctor may usually do it with microdiscectomy, where a special microscopy is used to keep a check on the disc and the associated nerves. The doctor will make a small cut for the procedure, and since the microscopy is used for a larger view, there is minimal damage to the tissues surrounding the region. In some cases, the doctors may choose to go a procedure known as laminotomy, where a small bone of the affected vertebra is removed, which allows the doctor to have a better look of the concerned part of the herniated disc. The patient is usually asleep during the surgery. In most cases, prescription medicines are used to reduce pain after the procedure is done. If the patient has come out of the numbness, he is advised to walk soon after.
