In the year, 2112, the place that used to be The United States of America has split in three. In The Variations, children are taken from their families at age six. After eight full years of education, they participate in a ceremony where their lives are laid out for them. This story follows a girl who goes through a tug of war in her heart, and her mind. Soon she is targeted by rebels, and seems extremely useful to the government by which she just put her life in their hands.

Kira's routine is disrupted as a once orderly city falls to rebellions and a rising revolution, which only grows over time. Tragedy strikes and Kira finds herself distraught and confused amidst the chaos. Newly found doubts in the regime begin to take root as she struggles with reality and identity, desperately seeking any answers to unknown questions, whatever they might be. Will she find what she's looking for?
