Amity's family has recently bought a whole family of slaves. Although she feels slavery is wrong, she can't bear to see her father angry with her. She keeps her mouth shut. But this unsure feeling inside of her is taking over. She tries as hard as she can to avoid ordering anybody around. Cassie, one of the slaves at the age of twelve becomes friends with Amity, and it becomes harder than ever to keep her feelings secret. She accidentally lets slip how she feels about Cassie and her family, and can hardly think about what her father did to correct it. How would she know he owned a whip? Amity, the name meaning friendship and harmony, intends to establish just that. After her father sells Cassie, and Cassie alone, she sets off to try to set her whole family free. Just wait until her father finds out...
