Biting the Atomic Hand of God
The latter half of the 21st century has not been kind to anyone, but especially to the city of Phoenix. Forced into an entirely nocturnal existence following events aptly- or sensationally- branded "The Culling of the Phoenix" in which day-time temperatures have become lethal, the city sits forgotten in the shadows.
However, opportunity glistens in the dark. And years later American trillionaire, Gary Godric, has invested interests in the city. After becoming the wealthiest man in the world through his discovery of a nuclear "miracle element", he has a plan to power half of the world through one giant reactor. A reactor which is under construction in the twilight city of Phoenix. Reborn and reinvigorated.
When the story begins, Godric is set to unveil his ambitious project just a few days prior to the new century. Issues arise, though, when he is killed in a tragic- and accidently public- accident that stutters the whole world. Fast forward to later that same night, and the two main characters, the ardent Michael "Mikey" Cox, and the more level-headed Gregg Goyer, two regulatory agents for the city, get a call to respond to a high-profile incident. It's there that they end up stumbling into a rabbit hole that the trillionaire's death opened wide up and that neither can seem to escape from. Coincidences quickly becoming conspiracies, and conspiracies become their spiraling and increasingly violent realities.
All the while, the birth of the 22nd century looms over all.
