This coming of age tale details the story of Ava Song, a first generation American born Chinese.
Ava's finally hit middle school and her parents seem like they're choking her with requests and denials. Her older sister just 'passed away' (she isn't allowed to say 'die' in the household, or even mention her headstrong sister) apparently because of her poor decisions, but nobody will tell Ava the truth. Her parents have openly discouraged her dream of becoming a writer and she feels that only her hidden friendship with her childhood best friend keeps her going.
But as the years go by, a hidden friendship becomes an open one, and a friendship becomes a hidden romance one that Ava knows her parents would never support. Can she and her boyfriend survive high school, go to college, keep their relationship secret and intact, all while fending off tiger parents? Ava has so many questions. But first and foremost, what or who actually killed her sister?
