la historia "The New Genesis of the Death Note" esta ubicada en 4 años después de la muerte del protagonista de la historia original creada por Tsugumi Ohba, light, quien ahora es un shinigami, decide volver al mundo humano para dejar un legado y así poder concluir su plan de crear un nuevo mundo para las personas trabajadoras y honradas, eliminándo así a todas las personas que cometan "actos impuros". Light elige a un joven llamado Anthony Carter, el cual es un estudiante sumamente inteligente que comparte los ideales de justicia de Light y desea convertirse en el nuevo Kira para así tomar venganza de todas las personas que atentaron en contra de el y de las personas a su alrededor, conforme la historia avanza nos damos cuenta que Light pudo haber tomado una mala decisión.
Obviamente, después de una serie de actos raros, Near se entromete en el caso y poco a poco se dará cuenta que Anthony o "KIRA" no es una persona con la cual se pueda bacilar.
