Bleak.

That, she determined, had become the word to sum up Rosalie Everett's ostracized life. Born and raised in Summerville, South Carolina, her childhood marred by the lurid mother of her mother whose killer was never discovered, she was left with a weight that pressed on her chest even after removing herself entirely from both the people and the phantoms of her hometown.

Relocated in New York, Rosalie spends her days commuting between school and work, a humdrum schedule that's defined her life for the past three years and left her desolate.

However, a visit to an antique shop places Rosalie in possession of a haunting sapphire ring that seems to tether itself to her soul. Ominous circumstances surrounding the gem put the twenty-something in Victorian England with little memory of what got her there, and she finds herself spellbound by a scarlet-eyed, clad-in-black butler whose charms are too convincing to be human under the service of a boy-earl, bound to one another by a sinister contract.

As she tries to find her way back home without falling prey to the infernal creature who has taken a dark interest in her, Rosalie finds herself a part of a much larger game when she notices the other entity that pervades her life.
