Aethelwin is a Peaceweaver.

Niece to the King of Northumbria, she is married at the age of 13 in order to strengthen support against Aelle, the would be usurper of King Osbert's throne.

But guaranteeing the support of strangers who have their own agendas is no easy task.

Aethelwin finds herself not only on the wrong side of the debilitating civil war, but at the mercy of a family and a village who blame her for their hardships.

Then, just as she finds the means to change her fate, history intercedes.

Ivarr the Boneless and his two brothers, Halfdan and Ubba, have laid claim to York. Aethelwin is flung into a world of chaos and panic as she fights against the Danes and even her own people, to bring her brother out of his stronghold in the north and restore her beloved Northumbria.

But at what cost will she fight for a Kingdom in the final throws of death.

A shy child, she prefers her prayers and pearls to the hefty politics her Father and brothers have no choice but to partake in but war will reach into her life quicker than she could ever know.... Across the sea, in England, the Wars of the Roses rages, a bloody battle for the throne between the royal Houses of York and Lancaster where a word weighs as much as the swing of a sword. Amidst it all, stands Edward of York, the handsome eldest son to the Duke of York, a young knight, eager to fight but forced to flee England in 1459 when the Lancastrian King and Queen overpower his family forces at Ludlow Castle. With his Neville cousins (one being the infamous Earl of Warwick) Edward sails to France where Warwick begins his plots to regain the House of York power. It is as a result of these plots, Edward and Constance are destined to meet. Worlds apart, they will be matched for the benefit of others but when tragedy strikes at the very heart of the House of York, forcing Edward closer to the throne than ever, they find they are, perhaps, what each other needs. Amongst the tangled nest of vipers, surrounded by bloodied thorns, will they keep the crowns destiny calls for them to claim?

Esme had one big fear in life: being captured as a thief by the city's guardsmen and being executed for her crimes, and that so heavily weighed on her mind that she increased her risks by being distracted in the middle of a heist. That's when she runs into Althalos Fourthborn: Inner Circle Guardsman, one of the many princes of the realm, an Aelif (Dark Elf, local dialect)...and her betrothed by treaty. (That was something her almost human mind could not handle.) So she calls off the heist, gets demoted into a far more risky job, learns the true bitter depth of what this treaty's bond is like, and lands safely by her prince's side....sort of. There were people who still wanted to end her life, even if she was in what most people would call a Happily Ever After. That and her prince had his own living fears that were gnawing at any chance they had. That and she might just lose her mind from everyday boredom. But the one she couldn't wrap her all-too human mind around was that she would one day grow wings and fly away from her almost Happily Ever After to live in a hive with ancestors more alien than a hottie with pointed ears and abandonment issues. ~~~~ Yes, there are adult themes in this book, and difficult subjects, but nothing is excessive, as this is probably my simplest story. So, trigger warnings: A history of assault. Occasional vulgar language. References to partial cannibaliam. Extremely mild, light, and rare sex scenes. At least one elitist mentality. ~~~~ Ages of MC/ML: Esme: Apparent age of 24, roughly 20 years lived (mostly human). Althalos: Apparent age of 30, roughly 65 years lived (Elves mature slower).

orenda (n.) a mystical force present in all people that empowers them to affect the world, or to effect change in their own lives. ------ The night Ragnar the Fearless and his family died was not only watched from afar by Uhtred Ragnarson, but also by the youngest daughter, Bemia Ragnarsdottir-a young girl who had to crawl on her hands and knees out of the burning hall, had to also watch in tears from the forest as her world was snatched out from under her. Uhtred had watched the attack, thinking only Thyra had survived, by being kidnapped. But little did he know that his youngest sister was running past him in the forest, desperate to get away. And she did. But the next part of her life was even worse, more traumatic than watching her family die before her eyes. Years later, Bemia had created a name for herself, created a reputation that was feared by most Danes and Saxons. Then she had finally found her brother again, and also a young warrior who she never thought she would fall for. -- Sihtric x fem OC! #1 thelastkingdom 30/06/2024 #1 finan 05/07/2024 #1 osferth 05/07/2024 #1 sihtrickjartansson 05/07/2024 #1 uhtred 05/07/2024 #1 sihtric 07/07/2024
