~~An Excerpt From Chapter 12~~
I could tell he meant to say something, so I held onto my cooling supper and waited patiently for it.
Finally, after a long while, he found the words; 'I knew I would marry eventually. And, most probably, for the sake of alliance to our cause.' He stopped contemplating the fold of cloth in his hand and looked directly at me; 'My lady, I have not been properly gracious. Your hand is an honour to hold.'
I had not expected an apology or anything but grudging acceptance up to our marriage and beyond it. I actually blushed. 'Thank you, sir.'
He nodded. He was still stiff and his retreat to proper formality was far too late after all I had already seen of him.
I never cared what man might free me from my curse but I knew that I should be so glad it was Favior. I liked him already. We could do well together - if he would only allow it.
I searched for the words to express that; 'Favior, I should tell you, about the curse-'
'Maud,' he interrupted. 'Please, I do not wish to talk of the curse anymore.'
His tone was low and fierce, a shock.
'Can we not put it behind us?' he asked.
