Elya, a fourteen year old girl, lives in a distopian society called Protand, a land above the Earth. She has just graduated from Dance, one of the five academies in Protand. When a child is born, his or her parents get to choose an academy to send their child; Military, Academic, Dance, Art, or Sport. Protand's system was created to help control their booming population, as one must graduate from an academy before they are allowed to have children. Most citizens in Protand are never able to graduate, and those who do often do so at a much older age than Elya. This book details the stories of Elya as she attempts to leave Protand and find the real world.
