Ever since childhood, August has been struggling with depression and suicidal thoughts that only Eli knew how to take away. High school is finally over, August's depression has been almost nonexistent, especially while on a summer trip to Europe, where August tells Eli that she loves him. Eli doesn't know how he feels, only knows that he still has a girlfriend back home. After a fight, August disappears, and Eli knows that she's finally done it. She's killed herself. Now he's plagued with dreams of her from the summer and the distant future, and knows that no matter what he does, they won't go away. But he doesn't want them to, because in these dreams, he can finally live the life he wanted with August.
