I walk up the stairs towards the guest room to grab a towel. I walk by the bathroom door, a faint humming resounding through the wood. Choosing to ignore it, I grab a towel from my room and wait outside the bathroom for Kai to finish his shower. But the humming becomes more persistent, audible even over the running water. Then it becomes distinguishable words. A deep, silky voice sings over the rush. "Baby, it's cold outside." I can't believe my ears. I press my cheek up against the wood to get a better listen, but I'm met with silence. No singing. No water. The door swings in before I can back away, and instead, I stumble forward. I immediately look up at a wide-eyed Kai in nothing more than a towel that hangs dangerously low on his hips. I'm positive my expression mirrors his. Chuckling nervously, I wiggle past him, trading places with him. "Whoops! Guess I was leaning on the door. Sorry 'bout that!" I start to close the door but he stops it with a strong arm. Taking a step forward, his face is inches from mine and etched with vulnerability. "Did..." He trails off. "You didn't hear anything...Did you?" His minty breath fans my face and I feel my face grow hot. I swallow the lump in my throat and take a deep breath to reply.

I ran after him, my vision getting blurry as my tears began to flow. He kept banging on the back window of the car, shouting things I couldn’t get because it was too muffled. I could see his eyes wide with fear and worry, and it made me cry more. But, because I was not born for running, it didn’t take too long for me to get tired. Kai quickly noticed that, the same time I saw those tears that gleamed at the corner of his eyes. “Kai! Don’t leave me! Kai!” I yelled, sobbed as my legs refused to move faster. “KAI, PLEASE! COME BACK! KAI!” For some reason, I knew that that would be the last time I would see him, so I willed myself to continue running even if it would kill me. When I saw him shifting away from the window, I almost lost hope, thinking that he listened to his parents and would really stop befriending me. But then I saw him again. He moved so fast and swift that he managed to open a side window before his parents could stop him. “Please don’t cry, princess! I will come back and find you!” His parents tried again to remove him from the window, but he almost hugged the edges for dear life just so they couldn’t. “YOU HAVE TO PROMISE YOU WILL WAIT FOR ME, RILEY!” “I promise!” A sob escaped from the back of my throat, so I gulped the huge lump that formed in it, and shouted with all the energy left in me, “I WILL WAIT FOR YOU! KELLAN, I PROMISE!” With that, we both stopped. I stopped running; he stopped struggling. And, before his parents could completely close the car window, he threw something at me that almost made me laugh. A candy.
