The Sentry is an ancient organization of beings of higher power. There are two alliances that a Sentry could be placed into. The Sentinels of Light or The Sentinels of Dark, who, by default, are sworn enemies. Once a Sentry turns 16, he or she must either be claimed by the sun or the moon. There are three rules that a Sentry must follow:
1. Do NOT fear your resistance
2. Do NOT question your alliance
3. Do NOT switch sides
And if you break a rule, you die.

Ember was enjoying her new found freedom from the Sentinels of Light under the alias Erika Wayland, that is until the Sentinels of Dark found her. She had thought that she had escaped the dangers of a life as a Sentry, but once a Sentry always a Sentry. The Sentinels of Dark need Embers help to destroy a threat, all while hiding from Sentinels of Light that are searching for Ember. During her transition from a Sentinel of Light to a Sentinel of Dark, she will meet the infamous rule breaker, Haze. Along the way, she will discover powers that have been dormant for years along with a forbidden love with the one person she hates most in the world. She always thought that the Sentinels of Light were the good guys, but as she unravels a bigger scheme at play, her mind may just change.
