What if the world was so overpopulated that there had to be something called the picking? People had to die and some got to live, forced to either work or die. Only 2 people get the highest rank any of the 'chucals' would ever get. Told in the perspective of Michael, a 'chucal' who's only goal is protecting Simone, his best friend.

"I met Amara Rowe the week she started school here. She watched as an old friend stuffed her face with marshmallows. She left after looking lost, so I followed her. She was by a trash can looking... frustrated. She threw away a paper and I picked it out of the trash can after she left.... it was a list. Every animal on Earth wants to kill humans, they have all mutated after the Nuclear War, all the ones that survived, and are out for human flesh and blood. Bastien Water's name gets called out during the Choosing and he has to try to survive on Earth. While his family grieves thinking that Bastien won't survive but he's out to prove them wrong. Bastien meets new people, makes some friends and make some enemies. Bastien has to face many challenges to survive on Earth. Will he be able to do it? I despise socializing with a passion. It's a fact: I'm terrible at it. Like the useless person I am with everything else except for academics.
