Z vedlejší místnosti se ozývalo děsivé sténání nestvůr, které vnikly do domu. Na zem odkapávaly kapky něčeho, co při kontaktu se zemí začalo syčet. Těžký dech vetřelců se roznášel po celém patře. Jejich klouzavé kroky vstoupily do obýváku. Škvírou mezi dveřmi skříně viděl jejich velké stíny a měl co dělat, aby zklidnil svůj dech. Stál tiše a bez hnutí, potlačoval potřebu křičet a lapat po dechu, aby na sebe zbytečně neupozorňoval.
Zaslechl hrubý hlas, který v cizím jazyce vyštěkl nějaké rozkazy a ostatní příšery se vydaly po domě, cosi hledajíc. Když jedna z nich míjela skříň, v níž se skrýval, zadržel dech a vzdálil se od škvíry. Upřímně doufal, že ho nenajdou, po zraku, sluchu ani čichu. Bylo by to velmi nepříjemné pro ně všechny. Nejen proto, že měl na sobě tričko z havajských suvenýrů, ale hlavně proto, že měl u pasu meč a věřil, že by se s ním nikdo nechtěl setkat.
