Merèll Hale aspires to become a professional ballet dancer. She works and trains really hard to get into the Dutch National Ballet. Determined not to let the relentless bullying at school get to her, she focuses herself on her dancing completely while engaging in loose friendships with anyone who is (acting) nice to her. Trouble strikes when she is diagnosed with chronic kidney disease and she is forced to make decisions she never even thought about before. In her early twenties, she has to consider whether she wants to have kids, what to do in life when dancing is no longer possible and who her true friends really are. This is a novel about life on dialysis, the devastating consequences of bullying and a healthy dose of perseverance. 'End stage kidney failure; it sounded like a death sentence.'
