Ethan Conte vient d'un petit village du nord de l'Italie appelé "Monte Isola".
Ses parents et sa grande sœur sont l'opposé de Ethan, lui il rêve d'être heureux et connaître le monde extérieur mais sa famille est associable et isolée du reste de la population. Ils sont hautains et impolis et lui est très gentil et doux avec les gens. Lors d'une escapade  interdite dans son village, Ethan va rencontrer Billie une petite fille de son âge. Elle va lui faire découvrir un monde qu'il ne s'imaginait même pas.
