The guardians thought they'd gotten rid of Pitch Black, being swept into darkness by his own nightmares. Everyone was in high spirits and decided to throw a party to celebrate. Everyone thought he was gone for good, everyone ALWAYS thinks they've truly gotten rid of fear. So when Pitch felt a huge spike of fear and darkness, he followed it to the source.
