The next moment in time that you walk past someone, whether it be a family member or a stranger, ask them, "What is darkness?" What is their answer? Ask yourself that question... what's your answer? Is it a dictionary definition or is it something more... something deeper in meaning? When you ask the normal citizen, you usually find that they know what one kind of darkness is. Everyone knows of the night's darkness. It comes after every sunset and leaves at every dawn. But some kinds of darkness are more dangerous than others. In some worlds, the only safety is darkness. The kind that swallows you whole, keeping you in its depths until it decides it wants you to leave. But sometimes, it decides to hurt you, take those you love. It takes everything from you until there is nothing left to take. That is the worst kind of darkness, and only few know what that really feels like. Aline is one who wasn't ever beautiful, she's programmed wrong, she's an error. In this dystopian world, darkness creates peace, and peace creates change. But sometimes change creates chaos. I was never meant to leave that room. I had spent my whole life in there, imagining what it was like on the outside. I looked forward to the day when I would finally be allowed to leave. But that day was never supposed to come. Until James decided to keep his promise. He had always been there, on the other side of the glass. Waiting. The experiment wasn't over. He was still waiting for me to change. But I didn't change. Not until that night. It was dark, and there was rain. The sound of the car engine was loud, but the crash was louder. In the crash, I became something different. I changed. But not for James. This new part of me emerged for one reason; to save her.
