Population control has become a tradition in the small town of Ahern, California- a horrible one, but a tradition nonetheless. Anyone over the age of 80 disappears. The disabled and handicapped cease to exist. The number of people ages 18 and under decreases by ten each year. 

In a sort of game called "The Competition," ten kids, typically thought to be delinquents, are chosen to be shot on sight. It has transformed from an essential element for survival into a sadistic game, in which children are chased down like they're wild animals. They have all but ten minutes to pack and run... as for curfew, anyone found outside the borders after 7:30 pm are to be shot at will. They lose each right as a human once their names are announced on the news.

The game is normally over within the matter of seconds...

But what happens when these ten kids find out about their draft before they're supposed to? 

When the children thought to be "delinquents" happen to be the smartest kids in the town?

When, for the first time in years, there's hope?

When you're marked you have two choices; fight or die. Nance lives in the past, literally. Her city is a recreation of early twenty-first century society. To the outside world they're experiments, just rats running around a maze. In an impoverished future world, the city seems to be their only chance of finding where they went wrong, or so they say. Nance doesn't know the real purpose of her home, and she doesn't care. All she sees are the one hundred teenagers, just like her, who are killed every year in the barbaric ritual known as the marking. They tattoo your face and pit you against your peers, against the city. Nance doesn't know why, but it doesn't matter, because she's sixteen and it's her turn to be marked. **So I decided to replace the original story with the rewrite because they are pretty much exactly the same. A Tournament is held once a year, where 34 children between the ages of 12 and 18 from 19 Regions battle for a chance to be the sole Champion. It has been going on for almost a hundred years. It is a tradition at this point. Everyone accepts it as what it is. Then, one year, the rules change. Instead of children between the ages of 12 and 18, they make it adults between the ages of 18 to 35. With this change, a woman is selected: Mavery. Mavery's past is quickly brought to the forefront. A truth about a death everyone assumed happened 15 years ago of one of their Champions. She has been alive this whole time, trying to hide from her past that is now forcing its way into everyone's present. She will now have to show everyone the truth and face the consequences of her actions, both past and present. She will be forced to battle with her wits in a Tournament she knows will kill her, and she is almost content with that, content with the fact she can finally rest. However, the rest of the nation will not let her die and will bring her back to life, kicking and screaming. They will make her fight for others and herself. Follow Mavery as she deals with her past, present, and future. Life, death, fake smiles, a performance, beauty, promises broken and more kept, all of these things and more stand in her way of finding an ending she feels she rightfully deserves and wants.

Surprisingly, Simone, a total stranger comes to his rescue and let's him hide out at her place, despite how it's destined not to work. Put together a man with a bounty on his head, a woman with too much to lose, throw in a healthy dose of trauma, teenagers, toddlers, sharing a bed with a stranger and you're bound to have a royal mess. Let's not forget the most important part, they can't fall for each other because that just takes the stakes up, you don't just wake up and get attracted to an assassin so you can be used as mafia bait, basically destined not to work. That's what this is, a mess that shouldn't work. But it does. And everything goes to shit because of it. A story about love, assassination, family and healing from trauma.
