If there's one thing Dapper Volhard has learned in her eighteen years of life, it's that anyone who gets close to her gets hurt. Or dead. In truth, the depth of pain she unwittingly causes is no mystery. She feels it all-while living in constant fear that her otherness will be exposed.

When Dapper discovers a mythical golden dragon egg, however, her prospects of anonymity are laid to waste. Forced to flee the High King and his dreaded beast, Dapper finds herself entangled in a prophecy she knows she could not be less suited to fulfill.

Yet, despite her misgivings, Dapper would give her life to protect the creature inside the glowing object that sets her frozen heart ablaze. With a prince of the Dark Court and a handsome, hauntingly familiar stranger as her unlikely allies, Dapper is compelled to accept the help offered and to rely on those she fears she may only break in the end.
