Maria is a killer. A killer as in an assassin and has a killer body. She and Rick O'Connell are friends since she almost killed him. When Rick goes back to Hamunptra, he takes Maria with him. 
Imhotep had a lover before Anck-Su-Namun.  The lover was forbidden to men because she was The Bride of The Gods. Only for the Gods not for men. But she was killed, now she is back as Maria. As she goes back to Egypt from France, she has to remember her past life as The Bride of The Gods.
