Lejos de las ficciones modernas, de los vampiros fluorescentes, bonitos y delicados, la figura mítica del siniestro y desagradable ser grotesco del «vampiro», se forjó en diversas culturas del mundo a lo largo de la historia. Cuando pensamos en estos peculiares seres, la idea del «chupasangre inmortal» se nos viene a la mente de inmediato.

No obstante, determinados personajes, presentes no sólo en el folclore sino también en los registros históricos de la antigüedad, han alimentado el mito del vampirismo de forma excepcional.
