After the War against Hybern, Ariciya returns to her life within the Court of Dreams and Illyrian military. Meanwhile, the Inner Circle searches for a way to break the spell on Vassa that binds her to the form of a firebird during the day. But, two years and zero working solutions later, whispers about the Mortal Queens rallying their forces for a revenge strike on Prythian surface. New weapons are being forged, and they need to prepare as soon as possible. As a result, Ariciya is faced with a dilemma-will she be able to face her demons and stand at the front alongside Cassian, or will she go down in history as the girl who wasn't supposed to survive?
