Elira is on the run from a dark force that's been pursuing him from ages. When he is nearly captured by these people, horrifying truths are revealed and his entire world shifts. He is at least somewhat aware of us, the reader, and acknowledges us often, that's why he takes explains things with oddly, making a comment or two about how he should've known you wouldn't know that thing.
