Marital and family relations arose in ancient times. Independently or at the choice of relatives, men and women were united in married couples sanctioned by religion and society and conditioned by economic and social expediency, as well as by the necessity of procreation.

The terms "marriage" and "family" have a different interpretation in different cultures. Marriage is usually understood as a society-sanctioned union between two adult people, whereas a family is a group of two or more people who are related by birth, marriage or adoption, living together and leading a joint household. These definitions of marriage and family are as flexible as possible and cover a wide variety of forms.

The considerable interest in counseling on marriage and the family, observed at the present time, is to a certain extent due to the rapid changes in the life of the Russian family that followed the restructuring.
