Авторская рукопись сборника была нещадно отредактирована Гордоном Лишем, с которым Карвера связывали контрактные обязательства[4]. Писатель был ошеломлён правками: его рукопись была сокращена не менее, чем на 50 %, концовки 14-ти историй были переписаны, 10-ти рассказам были даны новые названия[3]. В письме, датированном 8 июля 1980 года, Карвер умолял Лиша остановить публикацию книги, но редактор пренебрёг желанием автора[3][5].

«О чём мы говорим, когда говорим о любви» стал литературной сенсацией, критики наперебой хвалили Карвера за словесное мастерство, вменяя ему популяризацию минималистского стиля[1][5].
