In this world, your hands mean everything. Every line, curve, or indention on your palms defines your very destiny. When you are fourteen years old, you have the option to go to a professional Inscriptor to have your destiny read. Finna's parents are anxious for her to go, but there's only one problem.
Finna doesn't have an inscription like the others. She has no destiny. And in this world, living without an inscription can be dangerous.

It is Resa's birthday and she is 54 years old. Different- 1) Not the same as another, or each other; Unlike in nature, form or quality. I thought being different was a good thing. You know, the whole 'Im not conforming to you' deal. I thought I was unique, my own person. Apparently not everyone thinks being different is a good thing. They're afraid of my difference. Maybe it's my long white hair? Or my glowing silver eyes? Or it could just be because.... I'm not fully human. I tried to keep it a secret. Really I did. I knew the consequence of something like this getting out. So my secret stayed a secret.
