Poppy Van Amstel was afraid of a selection of various things - herself; speaking with social-amphibians like Natalie Daniels; finishing an essay on an odd number; that one particular shade of mustard her childhood chest-o'-drawers had been; but whales, especially.

Burnliths 'middle of nowhere' Valley was entirely enveloped by mountains, which meant virtually no escape route. It was an everybody-knows-everybody sort of town. Saint Mackillop Catholic College was one of two highschools available in the district, with an attendance of six-hundred students, all of whom drove Poppy mad.

Just reaching her breaking point, she wanted a Levi Stewart, or a Margaret, maybe even a Michael Holden or some other obscure, fictional character to make anything interesting for her anymore.
