Hiccup has a crush on Astrid but she hates him. Until he shows her Toothless.
Stoick believes his son is finally becoming a Viking. Until the day when he is supposed to kill a Monstrous Nightmare.
In a temporary moment of anger, Stoick disowns and outcasts him with the threat of death should they ever cross paths again. As a result, he leaves the village.
Having come second in Dragon Training, Astrid is chosen to kill the Nightmare, but she knows she can't kill him. When she hesitates, she is badly injured and Hiccup hears about it.
