Kyle Rico has been abused by his father for as long as he can remember. Each day brings up more beatings and more smart remarks about his dead mother who was murdered by his father. Soon Kyle's depression gets him hung up in The Hollister Gang, a group of high school teens who spend their time drinking and selling illegal drugs.
Naomi Foxworthy is a popular teenage girl. She is full of herself and thinks that even the slightest flaw in your appearance could cause you to be admitted into the world of despair and pain known as being a loser. Her main goal in life is to make everyone love her.
When their two worlds are collided, the leader of the Hollisters, Leo, gives Kyle the "pleasure" of killing one of the Hollisters rivals. When Kyle refuses, he puts his family, Naomi and himself in danger. In this teen-fiction novel that exposes gang violence and drug abuse, Kyle must find a way to escape the wrath of the gang before everyone who he has ever loved is shot.

Their mutual dislike of one another leads to a lot of hostility, routinely leading to Jay being sent to his school's principal. One confrontation in particular goes much too far, resulting in Jay's expulsion from school.
