In 1905, the law denouncing polygamy by the Mormon Church is fully enforced. Second families must go into hiding or be arrested. There is even a "finder's-fee" for those who turn in their own.
Ten-year-old Mary's father, a poor farmer, abandons Mary, her nearly-blind mother, and six brothers and sisters in the hills of the Wasatch Mountains to live in a shallow dugout not much better than a cave.
Close to starving, the family is rescued by a nearby polygamist. As the much older man's intentions become more threatening, Mary finds it harder to resist his proposal of marriage. Her family and friends, even her own mother, turn away from her.
During a six-year period, from Mary's childhood to a forced marriage at sixteen, Mary must first survive, and then choose her fate.
This is the story of survival, love, and compassion in a sometimes heartless existence. It is also the story of Mary's deep conflict with the Church's teachings on plural marriage, and with her father, who has abandoned them.

Based on a true story.
"...absorbing debut novel, based on a true story...an emotionally wrenching narrative out of U.S. history. Powerful, historically based novel of survival, beliefs, adaptation and resistance."-Kirkus Reviews
"Filled with rich description that makes its 20th-Century settings and people come alive."

"It was a mistake..." She told her mother, folding her hands into each other. "Marrying him..." Her mother said nothing, she simply sat there as her only daughter stood across from her, on the verge of collapsing from bruised ribs and cracked shins. "Mom." She wanted to reach out, softly tap her aging mother. Though that was the restriction of her life. The binding stereotype that she was gentle and slow to anger. In reality, what wanted to explode from her ribs was a scream of an animal, and the tears of repressed rage and fear. She wanted to throw her body onto the floor, but the thought made her damaged body ache more. There was no response from her mother. The deafening silence reminded her of her own quietness as her husband shouted at her, his fists bloody. He told her that she was only a tool for his amusement and a money-whore for her indigent family. She was nothing else but a tool for both parties. And she was starting to believe him. --------------------- Sarah Johnsen's life spirals from the normal gritty resilient fight to a serene wonderland. On the outside, she's married to a kind family with untold riches, but on the inside, her husband is the devil himself. Forcefully married at 18, Sarah was forced to kill her own dreams of becoming a doctor in order to bind her poor family to the rich bastards of Glendale by marrying their youngest; Oliver Grean. Their arrangement had the ability to brew the largest timespan of misery any of them has ever known. From lost toddlers to paid staged kidnappings, the binding of the two families, the Johnsen's and the Grean's created a mixture of chaos, confusion, sorrow, fear, grief, and dangerous rage. And there seems to be no haven to escape to. Or is there? The Edge of Misery: The Mitchel Brothers Series Book Two by BritCYancey

** Picks up where The Edge of Hell (Mitchell Brothers Series Book One) left off** If there's one thing Declan Mitchell learned from watching his mama almost die from the heartbreak of losing his daddy to a war nineteen years ago, it was that a great and powerful love delivered an equally devastating heartbreak and suffering-the kind he had every intention of avoiding like the bubonic plague. And until traveling west to Idaho Territory and coming face to face with the mismatch-eyed, auburn-haired beauty, Wren McCrawdon, he believed he might succeed in carrying out his plans of never marrying. Molded by her traumatic journey west when she was twelve, twenty-four-year-old, accident-prone Wren McCrawdon's life on her family's ranch in Falcon Ridge, Idaho, is full of back-breaking work, beginning as dawn's first rays peek across the mountains and ending long after the sun sets when she can barely drag her weary bones up the stairs to her bedroom. But from the morning Declan Mitchell and his family arrive, her miserable existence becomes more bearable until tragedy strikes when all she sees are the harsh realities of loss and suffering. Concerned for Wren's safety and remembering how bitter the edge of misery was after his daddy died-Declan discovers he's willing to do anything he can to take it away from her... even if it means a marriage of convenience is the only suitable solution. There are only two problems: first, it's already apparent he's following in his mama's footsteps toward eventual heartbreak, and second he somehow has to convince Wren to agree.

"Stop following me! Just let me go and leave me in peace!" she pleaded, struggling against his unrelenting grip. "I won't. Not today, not ever. Not after finding you again," he said firmly. "I don't belong here. This isn't my place. Let me go," she begged, desperation in her voice. He shook his head. "You've always belonged. Since the beginning of time, we were meant to be together." "You'll never convince me," she snapped. "I won't be part of this farce or let you treat me like an object without a will of my own." "It's not a farce. It's as real as the sun, and you will be part of it-whether you want to or not. Your only desire should be our companionship," he declared. "Please," she whispered, one last plea as her hand inched toward her waistband. "The only thing left to do... do it for her, if not for love. " he ordered. "For love?" she murmured, shaken. Then her expression hardened. "But love was never an option," she spat, her voice dripping with disgust-before she struck with full force. It wasn't supposed to end like this. Anwesha-once a soldier by choice, not birth-had embraced duty for her nation. But one failed mission led her to the dark waters of the Ganges. Caught in a whirlpool, she accepted death like an old friend. Yet, she didn't die. She woke up in another timeline, but here, she didn't belong. A misfit, a lone coal in a chest of gold. She wasn't chosen by fate, nor favored by the gods-just an accident struggling to return home. But every path back was closed. Trapped, she resolved to be a silent observer. Yet fate had other plans. She crossed paths with the Scions of Kuru, a dynasty shaping history itself. She hadn't intended to get involved, but now she was entangled in their world, for better or worse. Can she survive in this era, or will she find her way back? More importantly-who is she, really? And why her? After all, nothing in this world, or beyond it, is mere coincidence. • Book I ~ Stuck In Time Series •
